Democratic Republic of Congo
In 2002, Joachim Munganga founded SOPACDI as a means to bridge ethnic strife in the war torn DRC. From inception, SOPACDI's aim has been to bridge ethnic groups and to produce the highest quality coffee possible. With more than 5,200 farmers in the co-op now, 20% are women. Many are widows who lost their husbands as they tried to smuggle and barter coffee into Rwanda and the Fair Trade Premiums have been used to support them.
